Born on the Big Island of Hawai'i and raised in Ashland, OR the surreal sounds of life inspired illumined phonetiks (Codi Kodama) to project his version of vibrational sound tuning to the universe. Starting in the early summer of 2002 illumined phonetiks delved into the software realm of production via midi to develop an independent sound to articulate the unspoken nature that he witnessed in his daily life. In April of 2003 after moving to Oakland, CA to share a home with fellow friends/producers, the inspiration flowing from the intensely vibrant atmosphere of the East Bay, once shrouded in mystery became a beacon of illumination for this young man of 23. Living with housemates who studied at Expressions in Emeryville, CA gave illumined phonetiks a chance to learn a bit about engineering and mastering to further an independent approach to his productions. A constant student of production, analyzing techniques, watching demonstrations and learning to find a unique voice for himself through his version of dubby, glitchy, bass heavy tracks illumined phonetiks became more and more comfortable in his unknown genre of music.
Leaving the Bay Area in April 2006 for a sojourn in Hawai'i provided down time to contemplate his musical mission. In July of 2006 illumined phonetiks moved to Portland, OR where he resides currently, continuing to craft his vision of sound science. Inspired by the heavy sounds of dubstep and glitch hop he headed out once again to redefine his sound to reflect his travels and his evolving sense of sonic research. Using Reason 4 software for all of his productions proved a lasting digital romance which he has yet to tire from. In his words "illumined phonetiks is an experiment with the infinite capabilities that sounds provide, I love to gather a mixture of percussion, heavy bass, deep kicks and thought provoking vocal samples to leave the listener feeling like they just stepped out of a sci-fi mystery movie that has a hint of cosmic romance and odd humor."
